From Downing Street to Hillsborough Castle with FWIN
This past week at FWIN has been nothing short of remarkable—a true reflection of the power of grassroots voices making their way to the highest levels of government. We’ve been honoured to attend a series of events that brought together community leaders, public servants, and organisations across the UK, all united by a common goal: ending violence against women and girls.
On Wednesday, our Communications Officer, Cassie Jane, had the privilege of representing FWIN at the first-ever St Patrick’s Day celebration at Downing Street. It was a surreal and humbling experience—standing in one of the most recognisable political spaces in the UK, carrying with her the stories, resilience, and determination of the women of the North West.
Amid the celebration of Irish culture and identity, Cassie had the opportunity to speak with the Prime Minister about the work happening here in Derry and beyond. She shared how local communities are coming together to challenge harmful norms, support survivors, and build a safer future for all. In a space where decisions are made, it mattered to have a voice from our city in the room.
The following day, we were invited to Hillsborough Castle for a reception hosted by Her Majesty Queen Camilla, recognising individuals and organisations working to eliminate violence against women and girls. It was a deeply moving event. In the historic halls of the castle, surrounded by people who have dedicated their lives to advocacy and change, we felt seen, heard, and uplifted.
Catherine had the chance to speak directly with Her Majesty about FWIN’s mission and the courageous women we work alongside every day through our Ending Violence Against Women and Girls Programme.
These moments of recognition aren’t about prestige—they’re about visibility. About reminding the world that what happens in places like Derry matters. That the work of small teams and grassroots organisations is not only valid—it is vital.
