A Milestone Moment with the Equality Commission
Last week marked a proud and significant moment for FWIN—and for the wider North West—as we joined the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland for a special lunch hosted by the Mayor of Derry City & Strabane District Council. For the first time ever, the Commission held its board meeting outside of Belfast, choosing to do so right here in our city.
The visit was more than symbolic—it was a powerful recognition of the important equality work being carried out across the North West. We were grateful for the opportunity to sit down with Commissioners and speak candidly about one of the most urgent issues facing our communities: violence against women and girls.
At FWIN, we shared stories and insights from the frontline—shining a light on the transformational work happening through our EVAWG programme, the strength of our community partnerships, and the lived realities that fuel our mission. We also spoke clearly about what is still needed: sustainable funding, better data, trauma-informed services, and policy reform rooted in gender justice and intersectionality.
The Equality Commission for Northern Ireland is an independent public body responsible for promoting equality and challenging discrimination across a wide range of areas including gender, disability, age, race, and more. Their role in advising government, supporting legal change, and working with employers and public services makes them a crucial ally in advancing the rights of women and girls.
We were proud to represent the voices of women in our community and to contribute to a wider conversation about how we can build a safer, fairer, and more equal Northern Ireland—together.
This visit was a reminder that real change begins with listening to those at the heart of the issue—and we’re proud to be part of that call.
